Bunny Proofing Your Home

How to Make Your Home Safe for Your Rabbit

Rabbits are very curious creatures. They love to explore and can usually squeeze into places that you'd think impossible for them to fit into. Contrary to popular belief, many rabbits also like to climb. Just as they can squeeze into places you would never expect them to be able to get into, rabbits can climb and jump onto things you would never expect them to be able to reach. And then they stop your heart by jumping down!

We recommend that you make every effort to eliminate areas for your rabbit to climb and that you bunnyproof things your rabbit might be able to jump onto. Rabbits need to be protected from too much jumping, so they don't fracture or break their delicate front legs. Of course, if your rabbit is particularly fond of jumping, he or she will no doubt find things to climb and then jump down from them. Smokey and Snow are experts at this.

I place cloth-covered boxes in strategic climbing locations to encourage them to step down in increments. I cushion the tops of the boxes with a folded soft cloth or towel.

Cord-U-Copia

Since rabbits, by nature, chew just about everything they can comfortably fit their tiny jaws around, cords are especially chewable. The key is to eliminate the temptation. You can raise cords above your rabbit's reac and tape them to the wall. A rabbit's reach is defined as the height of your rabbit when it's standing (and stretching) on its hind legs. You can also cover cords with the heavy rubber cord covers that let you keep the cords on the floor. Keep in mind that some rabbits do chew these coverings, so you may not be able to use these.

Poison Control

Most household cleaner contain poisonous chemicals, which can kill your rabbit. Remember to keep all cleaning solutions aways from the area your rabbit lives in. Many health food stores sell cleaning solutions that are safe for rabbits and other animals. However, remember to select carefully because some solutions that are safe for dogs and cats may be fatal for rabbits. White vinegar is a good alternate cleaning solution that works well cleaning those little urine accidents, even on carpet.
